Landfill Methane Mitigation

Protecting facilities on reclaimed land from remnant hazardous gas threats

Landfills are the oldest and still most common form of waste disposal and treatment in many places around the world. These sites produce large amounts of combustible and toxic gases from that seep up from the ground to lower pressure areas, such as ground surface and off-site areas.

While wind dilutes the gas with fresh air, it can still pose a significant hazard to neighboring communities. Many landfill sites are also subsequently reclaimed as sites for new residential, commercial, or industrial facilities. In these cases, toxic and combustible gases can build up in the vicinity or within the complexes themselves, potentially compromising the health and safety of the occupant.

Gas Detection and Alarming

It is essential that all buildings in the vicinity of an active or repurposed landfill implement industrial-grade gas detectors across various areas for comprehensive and continuous monitoring to ensure the health and safety of its occupants. Gas must be monitored in the subsurface, near the surface, and above the surface (in the air) of a landfill as well as within monitoring wells, ventilation systems, and/or the buildings themselves

Automation and Integration Strategies

Combustible gases pose a significant hazard to buildings built on a landfill site, particularly in enclosed areas such as basements and crawlspaces that may contain heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) or electrical equipment. For large facilities, gas detection systems should integrate with it building automation system (BAS) and fit within its management and workflow framework.

Smaller buildings without a centralized BAS should program their gas detection system’s controller to trigger various alarms, turn off any ignition source near the location of the discharge of gas, and remotely notify a central monitoring center or the appropriate health and safety responders.

Our Products

Sierra Monitor’s Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) approved Sentry IT fire and gas system can ensure the safety and protection of assets and personnel at risk from landfills.
